Today I went to a new class with a new trainer.  And who is the first person I see when I walk in? My old trainer Jon.  You remember him.  The one who worked me so hard I was almost vomiting after each session? Yeah.  It was great.  He looked surprised when I walked in 2 hours before our regular time and then wouldn’t make eye contact in the weight room.  It was like when you cheat on your hairdresser with someone else and then you run into said hairdresser with a new cut or color.  Uncomfortable!!! I worked out today with Jenna, who was statuesque and lean like Gwyneth Paltrow but with a tomboy edge.  She was great and I never felt sick or pushed harder than I was capable.  Don’t get me wrong.  I’m willing to work hard, but when you push yourself to a point where you wish you’d rather be anywhere else, that’s not good.  Jenna was very positive with all the ladies in the class and I didn’t feel like “Private Benjamin.”  I brought that up to Jon the last time; that I felt like Goldie Hawn in the movie, when she has her Louie Vuitton on her bed and she said, “ugh? what? I just laid down and now I have to get up?”  You know you’re getting old when you reference a movie like this to someone and the first thing they say is “Goldie Hawn……isn’t that Kate Hudson’s mom?”

It’s supposed to be 90+ this weekend and I can’t wait to get into the pool (with a bathing suit, rash guard, sunglasses and hat).  It’s funny… my 20s I would use SPF 4 and once got a burn that was so bad I wouldn’t leave the house .  Now I cover myself up like Nicole Kidman at the beach.

Speaking of pools, love the laid back style of 60s-era photographer Slim Aarons.  It would be cool to have an oversized piece of his taking up half a wall in a hallway or a living room.  I’m partial to the one he took in Lake Tahoe with the beautiful pine trees, mountains and lake in the background.  Back then, everyone was very tan, wearing frosted pink lipstick and Pucci.  I was born in the wrong era.   I’m sure he had great stories about his subjects and sipping cocktails in between shots.

And I’m dying to see this (and I know Straw won’t be the one coming with me).  “Scatter My Ashes at Bergdorfs” – a documentary about the store, it’s history, iconic windows and clientele.  It is truly an amazing place and has a real feeling of dramatic fantasy to it.  If you’re ever in NYC and haven’t been, you must go (and it’s incredible at Christmas time.)

So yesterday some guy robbed the Subway sandwich place right near my house.  What I got a kick out of was he ordered his food first and then robbed them (what did he get away with? 100 bucks?).  You know you live in a small town when they have the police helicopter, dogs and tons of cops looking for the guy.  Granted he was armed, but a police helicopter? This made me realize that I no longer live in San Francisco.  Facebook was ablaze with updates and the neighborhood watch forwarded a press release.   A press release?  He robbed Subway, not Tiffanys.  So weirdly funny.

Don’t laugh but I’m on the hunt for a navy blue blazer for P for a wedding next weekend ( I know.)  I’m pairing it with a gingham shirt (stop laughing, Julie).  I always say he has more of an East Coast look about him.  And yes he has boat shoes, Nantucket reds and a bathing suit with navy whales on it.  Again, born in the wrong era.  He would’ve perfectly fit in to one of Slim’s photos.

Have a great weekend! C

This & That

Happy Wednesday!

How are you today? I’m doing well.  Trying to figure out how to get the office back in shape again (over the weekend it became our dumping ground for “where to hide shit when company is over and fool them into thinking your house is clean.”)  It’s amazing how laundry never ends, how you can fill up a paper shredder in no time, how the recycling bin overflows and the donation pile grows by the day.  How do we have so much stuff in our house? I don’t feel like we buy a lot, it’s just a matter of not having a place for everything (I have this weird notion that the moment I throw away a receipt, the item I bought will break, rip or fall apart).  I wish I could turn the house upside down and shake it out.  And I need to sell my stroller on Craigslist before Patrick applies to high school.

A couple of cool things for the week (or what I think is cool):

We watched “The Imposter” last week and were blown away.  Unbelievable. Scary. Strange. True. You can watch it on Netflix On Demand right now.

I love this candid between Carey Mulligan and Justin Timberlake at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.  Wonder what he said? They’re starring in the new Coen brother’s movie, “Inside Llewyn Davis” together.

How sweet are these landmark ring dishes from Anthropologie ($12)? Of course I love the Golden Gate Bridge.

One of my favorite authors, Jeannette Walls (“The Glass Castle”, “Half Broke Horses”),  was recently featured in New York Times Magazine about how she comes up with good stories from bad memories.

I may have to put this double breasted trench from Zara ($99) on my wish list.  Would look great with jeans and it’s perfect for a summer evening.  I’m also loving this look from them.

I adore the painted wooden animal figurines from Holztiger.  They look great on a book shelf in a baby or kid’s room and make nice gifts (from $8).

Jennifer Aniston recently invested in the Living Proof hair care product line.  The only reason I bought it was because I overheard a sales woman at Nordstrom say how great it is.  I tried it and love it.  I use their restore shampoo and conditioner but their frizz styling cream  ($28) is awesome (since having P, my frizzy hair is unbelievable!).

Excited that “Memoirs of a Hamster” has come out from Devin Scillian. ($12)  I’m sure it’s as funny as “Memoirs of a Goldfish.”

Tuesday Chic: Reese Witherspoon

I love the red carpet better than the award shows, and no one can pull it together quite like Reese Witherspoon, but it’s her every day dress that I think is pretty cool.  She looks stylish without being overdone (will Kim Kardashian be wearing Lanvin & stilettos to her daughter’s ballet classes? hmmm….) and I like her “California casual” take on running errands and going to soccer games.

Her Ojai house was recently featured in Elle Decor magazine and it looks like a beautiful retreat from the hustle and bustle of LA.   Too bad she sold it at the end of last year.  Looking forward to seeing what’s next for her.

We had such a nice weekend.  We bbq’d Friday and Sunday and went to Straw’s niece’s birthday.  Saturday, I got P off the steps and into the pool which was great (even though it was freezing!).  I managed to squeeze in a few workouts but completely fell off the wagon yesterday.  It was the day of the “endless stomach” (chips, a home made ice cream sundae and pizza for dinner last night).   I was sitting on the couch last night thinking, “this isn’t good.”  Too much indulging in good food and sweets over the weekend (I couldn’t get enough of the root beer floats).   Once I start eating badly, I want bad food all.the.time.   Salty chips.  Ice cream.  Ugh.  I can’t do that now, especially since I’ve been doing well for a month.

I don’t know what to get P’s teachers for end of year gifts.  I was asking the school secretary what gift cards she thought the teachers would like and she couldn’t come up with anything.  I’ve done Trader Joe’s and our local bookstore.  I thought Nordstroms but she said no.  Any ideas?  I would love to make something, but this crowd is not into cutesy stuff.  Let me know if you’ve heard of anything teachers would like/want.

Enjoy your Tues! C

Dream Holiday: Nantucket

Screen Shot 2013-05-20 at 4.51.55 PM

When P was 10 months old, I traveled back East to visit family and stay with friends on Cape Cod.  It was a fantastic trip and I’m itching to go back.   I’d love to visit Martha’s Vineyard or Nantucket again.  No TV.  Just hitting the beach, taking twilight walks, BBQ-ing, playing board games, going to grab ice cream after dinner, renting beach cruisers, and sitting on the deck at sunset.  I spent so many summers at the Cape when I was little and would love to have P have the same experience.

And what would I pack? Here’s my wish list:

Any fun plans for Memorial Day? We’re BBQing all weekend and going to a pool party (and not on Nantucket!).  The weather has been hovering at 70 or so which is kinda weird because you can wear jeans in the morning, by noon you wish you were in shorts and by 5 you’re cold again.

Hard to believe P will be out of school in a matter of weeks and summer has officially started.  Where did the year go? I’m keeping my fingers crossed that he doesn’t scream like a wounded animal at his first swim lesson.  I’m betting he won’t get in the pool.

I’m meeting with one of my favorite photography professors in a few weeks to hammer out my project proposal and need to come up with a cute photo shoot for little man for Father’s Day.  He insisted on wearing one of Straw’s A’s jerseys to bed the other night and I was trying to take a picture, but that’s hard to do when your 3 year old is running rings around you and cackling.

I hope you have a relaxing weekend and enjoy the holiday! C

Tuesday Chic: Solange Knowles

Beyonce’s little sister is all grown up.

I’m drawn to Solange Knowles’ sophisticated style and her laid back, eclectic approach to decorating her house in Brooklyn.  She dresses elegantly without looking overdone and love her bohemian-meets-Morrocan inspired table (not too fussy or too uniform looking).   She’s the perfect pick to be the face of the Madewell clothing line (and I love her hair!).

If you’re in Walnut Creek Thursday night, join me at J.Crew for their Style Guide Launch party from 6 to 8pm (and they’ll be previewing their new collection for summer.) Hope to see you there! C

Like a Rolling Stone

In honor of the Rolling Stones kicking off their 2013 tour, thought I’d share my favorite images of them shot by famed photographer Annie Leibovitz.  Leibovitz was named chief photographer of Rolling Stone  magazine in 1973 and joined the band on their 1975 tour (can you imagine?).  Mick Jagger and Keith Richards explained that after Annie hung out for a few days and photographed them, they forgot she was even there (the ideal for environmental portrait photography – my favorite style).

Below is the Rolling Stones clip from Leibovitz’s documentary, “Life Through a Lens.”  I love Keith Richards giggling and saying “I don’t remember that!” when shown pictures of him.

We had a nice weekend.  Straw was unfortunately not feeling great with a bad cough, but we still managed to make it in to San Francisco for a delicious dinner at Park Tavern and then drinks in North Beach.  So many new, fun places down there to try (being out of the city for 11 years, I feel out of the loop).  Went to a lovely BBQ with friends last night.  Kids had a great time.   The weather has been awesome.

Putting together a proposal this week for a personal photography project I want to get started on.  Will fill you in once I hammer out some details.

Happy Monday! C

Loft in Translation

Actress & Director Sophia Coppola and husband Thomas Mars just put their beautiful place up for sale in NYC.  I love the blue and white palette (so fresh and clean) and the natural light is beautiful (my goal for 2013? De-clutter!)Image

What is it about seeing celebrity houses? I love scouring design websites and blogs (something about seeing immaculate, interior designed spaces where the sky’s the limit budget-wise is fun).  Below are photos from Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin’s new Brentwood house.  The kitchen is to die for (what is it about photos of  big beautiful kitchens that I love?), and the all white house with the navy door? Perfection.

And of course I like the before and after photos of “designer-at-large” and Oprah’s sweetheart, Nate Berkus’ revamped New York apartment.  It’s interesting to see how he can transform a “blank canvas” of a wall into something completely different.  One of my favorite spaces he did was Katie Lee Joel’s New York brownstone that was featured in an old issue of Lonny Magazine.  Elegant and understated.

I feel terrible right now.  I’ve being doing this drop in class with one of the trainers at the gym and the last two days I’ve almost puked in his class (I know, I know, I’m sounding very “Danville” talking about “my trainer”, ugh). He told me I’m dehydrated (and I thought I was smart for eating steak last night).  The last two workouts I’ve done have sucked (has anyone ever projectile vomited on a rowing machine?).  The other ladies I work out with are like, super athletes (one is running from Reno to South Lake Tahoe) and Jon who trains us is working up to doing a 50-miler.  He ran for 6 1/2 hours last Saturday.  Hello? I only run if absolutely necessary (if I’m being chased). I’m shaky and feel panicky.  He said more water and two small meals before we meet.  I think I didn’t eat enough this morning (cup of cereal at 8am and nothing before a tough 11 am workout is not good).   The upside is I’ve traded my tumblr size vanilla latte for a small cup of coffee with a Trader Joe’s fat free creamer (no wonder the scale wasn’t moving) as well as cut out a lot of carbs and sugar during the week.  I’m down 6 pounds since the end of April and want to stay on track.  I want to feel better after a workout, not worse.

Can’t believe it’s already the weekend.  Heading out for a nice dinner tonight which I’m looking forward to.  Trying to figure out how I’m going to go to the bathroom with Spanx on under a pencil skirt.

Enjoy the day! C
