Happy Tuesday

Happy Tuesday! It was so nice to get that extra hour.  Upside? Feeling rested.  Downside? 4 year old up at 6am.  I’m getting excited about the holidays and decorating the house.  I can’t believe there was Christmas stuff out before Halloween was even here.   Next year, we’ll see ornaments and Christmas lights in September.

The new issue of Lonny is out.  Nice feature on Alexis Traina and some beautiful food photography.  The November issue perfectly captures the coziness of fall.

I don’t know if you remember the “Million Dollar Decorator’s” episode where Kathryn Ireland was redesigning Lindsay Lohan’s house but never showed the final reveal due to Lindsay’s car accident? Well, here they are courtesy of Domaine Home.

Tonight I’m going on a “date night” with Straw which I’m looking forward to since we haven’t been to dinner in a while.  We’re also going to see “Bad Grandpa” with Jonny Knoxville (love him!).  We love to go to an early dinner and then wander around the local bookstore before the movie.  I have a stack of books I need to read and I’m currently reading “The Never List” which is hard to put down.

Happy Friday

I am sitting here eating a mini frozen Twix. I need to get this Halloween candy out of the house. We asked P if he wanted “The candy witch” to visit (he puts all of his Halloween candy under his bed and the “witch” takes the candy and leaves him a present) and he thought about it for a long time, and then said no. This morning he asked where his candy was and said, “I just want to play with it” when I told him he needed to eat breakfast first. It was great seeing him super excited last night. He couldn’t get enough and it was fun to see it finally click with him. My favorite was he told our 5 year old neighbor Ella, who was dressed as a witch, that “her face looked beautiful.” I melted.

So Straw and I want to plan a little trip somewhere together but not sure where to go #WhitePeopleProblems.  I really want to go to South Carolina, but as we head into winter, I’m not sure I’m down with freezing cold.  I’m always up for NYC, but he doesn’t like it there.  He suggested Hawaii which would be lovely, but I kind of want to go somewhere I’ve never been.  The Caribbean is too far.   I don’t like Mexico.   I would love to do an East Coast trip and do Maine or road trip it and do a bunch of little East Coast towns.  Ideas?

This is my new favorite purchase and it’s nice and cozy (and I need to move away from stripes)

This Halloween costume was pretty incredible.  Hard to believe it’s Heidi Klum!

Saturday Night Live’s take on a Wes Anderson horror movie is pretty genius.

Tonight I’m going to a wine and cheese party and then have photo shoots all weekend which I’m looking forward to.  Christmas card photos are in full swing!  P and Straw are going on an “adventure” to go camping and duck hunting.  Hope you have a great weekend!

This & That

If you’re a fan of Wes Anderson’s work (“The Royal Tennenbaums,” “Moonrise Kingdom”) like I am, you’ll definitely have to check out his new book.  It’s on my Christmas list.

Just scored this oversized clutch from Toss designs -$40 (and the store offers monogramming in gold on the bag which makes it extra special).  Also comes in navy and black but like Steel Magnolias,  “orange is my signature color!””

I think the Teavaro bib from Bauble Bar ($36) is so pretty.
Any plans for the weekend? Saturday is usually P’s “adventure” day, where we take him somewhere top secret.  When I was growing up, my dad would take me and my brother out for “adventures” and we’d wind up at a park, at the beach, out for club sandwiches and ice cream.  The anticipation of not knowing where we were going always made it fun and we went all over the Bay Area.   Tonight we’re making Halloween cookies and watching Charlie Brown.   Hope you have a great weekend and enjoy this beautiful fall weather!C

The Gift

Image

I recently pulled a box out of the garage of some of my favorite childhood books.  One of them was “Sleeping Beauty” and I grabbed it to read to P.  The first page took my breath away.  Inside was a handwritten note from my mother; a lovely dedication for my 3rd birthday.

It read:

August 15, 1978

“Happy Birthday, Dear Eeens-Beneens! Happy 3rd Year! and Happy Life! and I hope that you will always love life and the “citizens of the world” as much as you seem to Right NOW! – All my precious love to my lovely and charming little girl.  I hope that you also love this book with it’s beautiful illustrations as much as I do….”   Mummy

Coming across this note, 35 years later, as I sat down to read it to my son, was such a wonderful surprise.  Such a gift.  She did this with all of the books she gave us.  The notes were written in her signature felt tip pen and you could hear her voice come through, as if she was sitting in the room.  Whenever I give books to friend’s children, I always make sure I write a sweet note.  Because of her, I realize how important this is to do.

What are you up to this weekend? A good childhood friend of mine is coming over for a swim and dinner.  I’m excited for P to spend some time with her.  Our mothers were best friends and my mom would write many notes to her and her brother in the books she gave them over the years.  I continue to write notes to P in the books I give him because you never know  if he’ll be sitting down to read one to his child after I’m gone.

I hope you have a lovely weekend!

Bookshelves

If there’s one design element that I’ve always been fond of, it’s the eclectic bookshelf.  Maybe it’s because my parents had a built in bookshelf in the den filled with a ton of books growing up, but it’s certainly something I gravitate to when I think of a place to relax in the house.  One of my friend from high school’s mother had an office with a built in bookshelf surrounding a couch and I remember thinking that if I had a little hideaway like that, I’d never leave.  She had a round table in there with her day calendar on it and personalized stationery.  It was my idea of heaven.  What a lovely little retreat to have a room full of books.

There is an english language book store in Paris, in the Marais district, called the Red Wheelbarrow.  It’s how you picture a bookstore to look like in a movie.  Floor to ceiling bookshelves and stacks of books around the floor.  It’s the kind of place that you seek out to get lost in.

Merci home store on the boulevard Beaumarchais in the center of Paris is a fabulous home and clothing store.  The best part is relaxing with a cup of coffee after an afternoon of shopping in their used book cafe.

Who knew actor Jeff Bridges was an undercover photographer? He often takes his Widelux camera on set with him and snaps photos in between takes (like on the set of his western, “True Grit.”).  The images give us a rare glimpse into the world of movie making behind-the-scenes.  He’s recently published Pictures, a collection of his photographs and was nominated for an Infinity award for his photography.

What Time is It?

Just got back from vacation where I ate a lot of wonderful food, had many delicious cocktails and indulged in too many desserts.  I got a lot of sleep, flipped through magazines at the pool with my best friend, had lots of laughs, shopped, laughed, drank, sat in the sun, slept, ate popcorn in bed and watched “Some Kind of Wonderful” for the 100th time, slept, hit the spa, enjoyed  iced coffees and today I’m hung over from my vacation.  I came home, stayed up late catching up on shows and was slammed back into reality at 5:45 am this morning when the three year old came in to tell me he was hungry.  I had a great time and was very excited to get home and see him but sometimes you wish you could wade back into your life versus feeling like you were thrown into the deep end in freezing cold water.  But that doesn’t happen with a three year old.  I know this sounds like I’m complaining but I’m not.  I know this sounds spoiled, but I think the lesson learned was I was still pretending like I had no where to be last night when I was surfing the web, watching TV and didn’t lay down until 1am.  In other words, still acting like I was on vacation.  You can’t do this when you’re a mother.  When you’re back, you really have to be back.  There’s no “taxiing on the runway before takeoff” any more.  When my girlfriend got home, she sent me a snapshot of the laundry that had piled up from being away from her husband and kids for 4 days.  The trip was wonderful but the carriage definitely turned back into a pumpkin when we walked through our front doors.

Oh, and the sugar/bread/drink detox starts today.

I’m looking forward to “Vintage Bowles” where Hamish goes all over the world in search for pieces for his couture collection.
