City of Angels

Jared Leto, actor & musician (he’ll always be Jordan Catalano in my eyes) partnered with a number of celebrities to talk about what their experiences and impressions of Los Angeles are and created a video with his band, “30 Seconds to Mars” playing the background music.   Check it out (and Lindsay Lohan should’ve never enlarged her lips!)

I spend a weekend once a year in LA for the Oscars and have to say, it’s a pretty intriguing place.  It’s exciting, glamorous, humming with energy and you never know what can happen or who is around the corner.  It’s an “anything goes” type of place and no wonder so many people flock to LA hoping to make it big.

Monday, Monday

How are you? How was the weekend? Ours was good.  P and I went to the gym, to a birthday party and then we hung around and relaxed all day yesterday and I did a Target run (exciting, I know! But Target is Mecca and I almost do a happy dance in the parking lot).  I’m in the planning stages of P’s 4th birthday and last night he asked Straw for a pet cobra for his gift.  Straw said, “but it can kill you” and P said, “no, it would be behind glass in my room.”  I think he thinks we can have a collection of animals over here like at the aquarium.  It’s going to start looking like Noah’s Ark if we have a dog, a rabbit, and now a snake.  Well….we’d have to have two of everything (no thanks! I’m not cleaning any more animal crap out of cages. I’m a mom, not a zoo keeper).   I’m also starting lots of fun photo shoots, trying to lose 15 pounds and convinced I’m going through menopause (hello? Night sweats anyone? Probably doesn’t help that I’m under a down comforter when it’s been 75+ degrees out).

A few things for your Monday:

Anyone see Ray Donovan last night? Holy smokes! I could barely watch it it was so disturbing but the show is soo good!

Putting “The Writers Room” on my list of must watch TV.  They do a round table discussion of how the writers behind our favorite shows (“Breaking Bad,” “Dexter”) come up with ideas and character plots.

Lovelace

It’s been kind of a ho hum summer, movie wise which is why I’m looking forward to seeing this.

“Lovelace,” starring Amanda Seyfried and Peter Sarsgaard (love him!), follows the rocky life of porn star Linda Lovelace, who is used and abused by the porn industry as well as her husband.  James Franco, Sharon Stone, Chris Noth, Adam Brody, and Chloe Sevigny round out the stellar cast.

And now that “The Killing” is over, I’ve heard this is great.  And love that the episodes are available on Netflix on Demand

“Orange is the New Black”

From the creators of “Weeds,” “Orange is the New Black” follows Piper Chapman, a thirty something woman serving 15 months in prison for a decade old crime of moving money for her drug dealing girlfriend.

Are you watching anything great? The press is already humming about Season 4 of “Downton Abbey” which will premiere January 2014, but that’s too far out for me right now.  Why they don’t bump up the date here in the states (sigh) and how will we watch it without Matthew?

Last night our carbon monoxide alarm beeped once (my guess was low battery) but one of my first thoughts was, “can I really call the fire department at 11pm looking as terrible as I do?”  This is coming from being brought up by a woman who said “never run to Walgreen’s late at night for milk without makeup on.  You never know who you’ll run into.” I looked like hell.  Frizzy, chlorine dried hair in a knot.  Bad roots.  No makeup.  A few zits.  Fat sweats. Not that you should greet firemen at the door with a perfect blowout and lip gloss on but c’mon.   I looked worse than bad.  The last time they were here, it looked like the cast of “Magic Mike” walked through the door.  And I was makeup free then too.  No bueno.   I’m happy to note that I didn’t call them and we luckily made it.

The wild man gets home today from being in the wilds Africa.  He’s already caught me up on being charged by a buffalo.  Awesome.  He shot a buffalo the last day he was there.  I told him it’s not ending up in my living room.

Enjoy your Wednesday! C

Tues Chic: Charlotte Rampling

Screen Shot 2013-07-16 at 1.30.01 PM Screen Shot 2013-07-16 at 12.53.33 PM

Last season, I thought the serial killer drama “Dexter” had “jumped the shark” and I was wondering what kind of story they could possibly come up with for the 8th and final installment.  British actress Charlotte Rampling starring as Dr. Evelyn Vogel has been a refreshing and a powerful counterbalance to Dexter’s conflicted life.

Rampling was a model before making her first film, Richard Lester’s “The Knack….and How to Get It” in 1965 and has gone on to star along side such movie heavyweights as Sean Connery, Robert Mitchum and Woody Allen.  If you haven’t seen “Swimming Pool” (2003), it’s a good one to add to your Netflix queue.

Her Bond-girl-esque 60s bombshell look from her modeling days makes her the perfect pick for Tuesday chic.

This & That

I could not get out of bed today.  Could.not. Maybe because I’ve been staying up too late watching TV and reading.  Maybe I’m getting old.  Maybe it’s both.  I’m a night owl so when morning rolls around, I’m dead to the world.  Straw says to me, “I’m surprised anything gets done around here with the way you are in the morning.”  My mom was the same way.  I used to say she was PC “pre cigarette” and PC “post cigarette.”  It’s like her “on” button was flicked once she had a coffee and a cigarette.  Me? I don’t start feeling normal until around 10 am, and that’s without coffee or a cigarette.   I like to enjoy coffee when I hit the daily wall around 2:30 PM.  The comedian Jim Gaffigan talks about staying up late: “It is amazing how much more amazing sleep is in the morning. You wake up and you’re like…
“I stayed up to do what?! Watch Growing Pains? What was I thinking!?”
But at night you’re like…
“La La La La La, Hey! Growing Pains, awesome! And I’ve seen this episode, that Kirk Cameron always in trouble.”

My problem is I have a “Growing Pains” moment every night around 10:45pm.

Here are my picks for this week (or what I think is cool):

If you’re a Nikon DSLR nerd like me, well they just came out with the new D4 (Why Nikon? Why? Now I have something new to obsess about). 16.2 MP FX-format CMOS sensor, 10 fps continuous shooting, a 91,000-Pixel RGB sensor and Advanced SRS, improved 51 point AF System, ISO expanded to 204,800 and 1080p video at 30p with stereo sound. From $5,999.95

And I forgot (how could I forget?) to add BBC’s “The Fall” with Gillian Anderson to my lineup of new favorite dramas. Only 5 episodes that are available on Netflix on demand.  Anderson is a investigator chasing a serial killer in Belfast, Ireland. I’m in the middle of episode 3 and the show is great.  And where has Gillian Anderson been hiding since X Files?
