This & That

If you’re a fan of Wes Anderson’s work (“The Royal Tennenbaums,” “Moonrise Kingdom”) like I am, you’ll definitely have to check out his new book.  It’s on my Christmas list.

Just scored this oversized clutch from Toss designs -$40 (and the store offers monogramming in gold on the bag which makes it extra special).  Also comes in navy and black but like Steel Magnolias,  “orange is my signature color!””

Angelo Merendino documented every stage of his wife’s breast cancer.  His portraits capture the emotional battle of this senseless disease.

I think the Teavaro bib from Bauble Bar ($36) is so pretty.
Any plans for the weekend? Saturday is usually P’s “adventure” day, where we take him somewhere top secret.  When I was growing up, my dad would take me and my brother out for “adventures” and we’d wind up at a park, at the beach, out for club sandwiches and ice cream.  The anticipation of not knowing where we were going always made it fun and we went all over the Bay Area.   Tonight we’re making Halloween cookies and watching Charlie Brown.   Hope you have a great weekend and enjoy this beautiful fall weather!C

Good Morning!

How are you today? Hope you enjoyed your weekend.  I had a great time at the Timberlake/Jay-Z concert Friday night at Candlestick (Jay-Z brought the house down).  Even though it was freezing, once the music started, you forgot about the bitter cold of what summer is like in San Francisco.  I saw these poor girls in shorts and sleeveless tops (obviously not natives or current residents of the city) while others were wearing beanies and goose down (me!).  The show was amazing and I’ve been listening to the set list all weekend on Spotify.

And I’m definitely setting my TiVo to record Jay-Z’s “Picasso Baby” performance art film (Coming to HBO this Friday, August 2nd 11pm)

Last fall I bought a field jacket from J.Crew that I wore all the time and still do.  I love that look and I”m thinking of adding this tres-chic Barbour to the mix

My summer books are starting to pile up, but I want to add this one to the list

A Dual Inheritance – Joanna Hershon ($18.28)

From Amazon.com:
“Autumn 1962: Ed Cantowitz and Hugh Shipley meet in their final year at Harvard. Ed is far removed from Hugh’s privileged upbringing as a Boston Brahmin, yet his drive and ambition outpace Hugh’s ambivalence about his own life. These two young men form an unlikely friendship, bolstered by a fierce shared desire to transcend their circumstances. But in just a few short years, not only do their paths diverge—one rising on Wall Street, the other becoming a kind of global humanitarian—but their friendship ends abruptly, with only one of them understanding why.

Can a friendship define your view of the world? Spanning from the Cuban Missile Crisis to the present-day stock market collapse, with locations as diverse as Dar es Salaam, Boston, Shenzhen, and Fishers Island, A Dual Inheritance asks this question, as it follows not only these two men, but the complicated women in their vastly different lives. And as Ed and Hugh grow farther and farther apart, they remain uniquely—even surprisingly—connected”

Met a woman over the weekend who was sporting these TOMS sunglasses ($139).  Who knew TOMS made such cool glasses? Thought they were a great mix of a cat’s eye and the throwback Ray-Ban Risky Business look. Plus, love that they’re black and tortoise shell.

Michelle Williams is perfect in the new fall Louis Vuitton campaign.  I’m a big fan of hers…

Dig this print from Marc Johns.  Would be funny for a powder room.

Is my hunter hubby rubbing off on me? I think this makeup case ($44) from C.Wonder is pretty cute.

Yes, I love bags.  I think a bag can completely represent your style in it’s sleek and beautiful presentation.   And I think this one from IOMOI ($398) is really cool.  And of course I love the monogram.

I know I mentioned “Ray Donovan” in one of my previous posts, but if you haven’t checked this show out yet, I highly recommend it. One of the best shows I’ve seen in a long time.  And Liev is fantastic.

Have a good one! C

Dream Holiday: Nantucket

Screen Shot 2013-05-20 at 4.51.55 PM

When P was 10 months old, I traveled back East to visit family and stay with friends on Cape Cod.  It was a fantastic trip and I’m itching to go back.   I’d love to visit Martha’s Vineyard or Nantucket again.  No TV.  Just hitting the beach, taking twilight walks, BBQ-ing, playing board games, going to grab ice cream after dinner, renting beach cruisers, and sitting on the deck at sunset.  I spent so many summers at the Cape when I was little and would love to have P have the same experience.

And what would I pack? Here’s my wish list:

Any fun plans for Memorial Day? We’re BBQing all weekend and going to a pool party (and not on Nantucket!).  The weather has been hovering at 70 or so which is kinda weird because you can wear jeans in the morning, by noon you wish you were in shorts and by 5 you’re cold again.

Hard to believe P will be out of school in a matter of weeks and summer has officially started.  Where did the year go? I’m keeping my fingers crossed that he doesn’t scream like a wounded animal at his first swim lesson.  I’m betting he won’t get in the pool.

I’m meeting with one of my favorite photography professors in a few weeks to hammer out my project proposal and need to come up with a cute photo shoot for little man for Father’s Day.  He insisted on wearing one of Straw’s A’s jerseys to bed the other night and I was trying to take a picture, but that’s hard to do when your 3 year old is running rings around you and cackling.

I hope you have a relaxing weekend and enjoy the holiday! C

Dreaming of a Spring wardrobe

I can’t wait for the weather to warm up and start enjoying cocktails on the patio, BBQs, a good book in the hammock, day trips and punches of color in my wardrobe.  Here are some of my favorite finds.

Moon and Lola Acrylic Monogram Necklace.  Hard to pick a color but ended up with the orange one. It goes with everything. I love it.

Image

Came across Roberta Roller Rabbit on my last trip to LA.  Their tops are so pretty and would be perfect over a bathing suit or with white jeans.  Makes me want to hang out poolside. Image

I’m a big fan of C.Wonder.  I spotted this jacket on their site and love it because you hardly see pretty sorbet colors in quilted jackets.  This is a great cover up for when it starts to cool down in the evenings.

ImageThe most comfortable jeans for the best price I’ve found are Kut from the Kloth at Nordstrom.  These are their perfect white skinny jeans (great fit!)

ImageLooking forward to warm lazy days and dinner outside in the evenings.  Hope you’re having a nice Monday.

Spring Picks 2012

One of my friends recently asked, “Are you still doing your ‘Madras & Tonic’ blog? I loved it.”  For a second I had to remember what she was talking about it’s been so long.  The craziness of a 2 year old, a photography business, a husband who travels frequently and a yellow lab who thinks she’s 2 has kept me busy.

I wanted to post a few of my “favorite things” I’ve come across recently for Spring.  Can’t wait for the weather to get warm to start wearing some of these looks!

Image

I love love love J.Crew shorts.  I love that they come in a couple of different lengths and they go with everything (I’ve had a few pairs for years and they’ve broken in quite nicely).  I’m excited to wear these this year with a boatneck sailor shirt and ballet flats or Jack Purcell’s (when am I NOT wearing a sailor shirt?) And I just got them in tennis court green.  They’re $45.00 and you can purchase them by clicking here.

When I was in LA last month, I stumbled across the Pretty Ballerinas shop.  It was an entire wall of ballerina flats (I was in heaven) and couldn’t decide on just one pair.  If money was no object, I’d have the Chanel black and tan ones that I crave every time I see them at Saks but $450 just is too much!  Save money (these are $199) and still wear something adorable.   These can be purchased by clicking here.

Image

If you’re a fan of Tory Burch like me, her ex Christopher just opened his Tory-like shop, C. Wonder in New York.  For us West Coasters, it’s great there’s an affordable online shop where you can purchase housewares, clothing, jewelry and accessories.  I love this orange pillow cover for $44

Image

This charming leather pink wallet for $68.00 (I especially love it because it has my initial)

Image

This elbow patch sweater for $78.00 (would look great with a pair of your J.Crew shorts!)

Image

and this Violette decorative plate for $8.00 to put in your bathroom and stash your jewelry.

Image

You can visit the C.Wonder online store by clicking here.

I think dainty gold jewelry is so pretty, especially when layered together and paired with a simple white t-shirt or blazer for going out.  I found this arrow on Etsy for $21.00 that I think is darling and is a perfect thing for day and night (as well as make a great gift!).  You can purchase it by clicking here

Image

I’m always looking for the perfect nail polish color for toes for warm weather.  I found this one last year from OPI called Elephantastic Pink and can’t get enough of it.  It looks great with every skin tone.  To purchase, click here.

Image

O.k, I’m going to name drop here. I was standing next to Cameron Diaz in the bathroom (yes, on my LA trip) and noticed she was wearing a beautiful diamond and gold bangle on each wrist.  I loved how thin they were and complimented her on them (really…what else are you going to say to an A-list celebrity while waiting for a bathroom stall?).  I’m venturing to guess they’re the ones by Jennifer Meyer and can be found by clicking here.   It says “price upon request” which translates to “expensive.” If your sugar daddy can afford it, have him by you 3.  They look great stacked together. Check it out.

For your next outdoor soiree, make a drink with a bit of a twist on the traditional like the cranberry margarita.  It’s always a nice little surprise for your guest to serve something a bit unexpected. For the recipe, click here

Having a two year old who is always grabbing your sunglasses off your face is not good.  I promised myself a few years ago that I was going to take great care of my glasses but to no avail they ended up in the bottom of my purse or thrown into the passenger seat of my car.  Over time, of course the lenses were scratched.  I wanted to replace the pair and did a little research online and found them for $66.75 (which is awesome because Macy’s is selling them for $125).  Look for these Ralph Lauren sunglasses and other brands by clicking here

Image

This Spring season I’m foregoing my LL Bean canvas bag for something smaller and more chic.  Saw this bag by Baggu in a window in SF and it stopped me in my tracks.  I had to buy it (and why not for $24?).   Me? Sailor Stripes? No!  Comes in a number of colors.  You’ll look trey Parisian toting this. For more colors and all types of shapes and sizes, click here

Well, that’s it for now.  I’m hoping to revisit this blog more often with great finds, ideas, etc.  And thanks Kealy for telling me your missed my blog!
